Robustness Analysis / Communication - Class Diagram

When producing Class Diagrams, according to the Robustness Analysis approach we use entity classes appearing in the Communication Diagram to produce the respective Class Diagram.
My question is whether it is wrong to establish associations in the Class Diagram, when no links (message exchange) appears in the respective Communication Diagram.

Multiple Actors/UIs and Communication Diagrams

In the Robustness Analysis approach (ICONIX) Classes participating in a Communication Diagram are derived from the respective Use Cases. The general proposed architecture of Communication Diagrams incorporates a) One Actor b) One Boundary Class c) One Control Class and d) As many Entity Classes identified in the Use Case
Two questions:
1) What if the Actor encounters more than one UI during the use case? Is it OK to use 2 Boundary Classes in the same Communication Diagram?
2) What about depiction of Secondary actors? Are they omitted? (I am asking because I have never seen a Communication Diagram with more than one actor)

Thank you!

Thinking about a good UML Scheme (need help)

Hello,

I'm new to UML and designing :)
I'm designing a UML scheme for vehicles and stuff,

My first concern is that i will have several kinds of vehicles (car, trucks, bicycle, and later maybe boats)
but as you know is that cars and trucks have a licenseplate number, chassisnumber, so things that a bicycle doesn't have.

I was thinking of making an abstract class "Vehicle" and make subclasses for car and truck and bicycle.
But if I do it this way i will have to add the attributes like license plate to the abstract Vehicle class, but this way a bike will also have this attribute when he will inherit from vehicle, and this sounds kinds of silly to me

I also was thinking about making vehicle an interface, but then i have to add the attribute license plate to car and again to the class truck, which is not good i think...

does somebody has an idea of solving this in a proper way?

Thanks in advance

UML Exercise

Hey there im new about creating uml diagrams and on my own initiative i just wanted to learn more about it!

i just wanted to know how would i be able to create a uml diagram of this exercise?

[quote]

Imagine you are working for the local county council in their IT department. One service the council provides is an electronic list of forthcoming community fitness class opportunities. This is subscribed to by local health and fitness professionals so they can contact the venue and book their clients onto appropriate classes. Currently, the fitness class list is distributed as a flat text file each month to the subscribers (by sending the file as an email attachment).

Ultimately, provide a client-server application where subscribers can log on and obtain the most up-to-date information directly but before embarking on such a project they initially require a single-user, stand-alone system which will enable an Event Coordinator to manage the list more efficiently than manually generating the text file.

The data fields recorded for each fitness class opportunity are provided in the table below:

[img]http://www.freeimagehosting.net/zqv46[/img]

Develop this application in C# (using a multi-form windows application) and have been given the following list of functional requirements for the system:

•	Add the details of a fitness class opportunity. All data must be entered by the user and not generated automatically; however, fitness class opportunities with duplicate id numbers should be prevented.
•	Delete an existing fitness class opportunity.
•	Display a list of all fitness class opportunities.
•	Store the fitness class opportunity data to disk.
•	Retrieve the fitness class opportunity data from disk.[wmv]
•	Generate the following reports. These can be saved as flat text files ready for emailing to subscribers as in the current system (management of the list of subscribers and email functionality is outside the scope of this system):
	A list of all fitness class opportunities (sorted by id)
	A list of all fitness class opportunities for a particular day of the week
	A list of all fitness class opportunities at a particular location

[/quote]

Need a help to draw a sequence diagram

Hi,
Nowadays I'm drawing a sequence diagram for an assignment. Since I'm new to UML I don't have clear idea about sequence diagrams. In my case(simply It's a patient record management system) there's two system users Doctor and Student. Doctor have privileges to access the patient profile and add or edit new or existing records. But Student only privileged to access patient profile to view the added records. I really don't have any idea how to map this in a sequence diagram. Please somebody help me to get rid of this problem. :roll:

How to define usages of static classes in class diagram

Hello,

I have the following problem. I have to reverse enginere an technical documentation of an existing project. In this proces I entered the moment that i can't avoid some dirty issues. One of the things I have a trouble to get in an Class Diagram is the usage of static classes, which are only existing static, even on places where it is unnessecery. See the following code:

<pre>
$Warehouse=FactoryWarehouse::getWarehouse($id)
$Location=FactoryLocation::getLocation($id)
$product="banana";
Stock::Save($Warehouse,$Location,$Banana)
<pre>

The usage of the Factory Pattern is something I formiler with. But the last line, the Stock-line, is mij problem. In the Stock-class is a lot of things happen, but the only way it is uses is on this way. PHP is very generous in how a programmer can write its code, so the Stock can be there magicly is is never declered before.

How can I make a class diagram of this?

Thank in advance

UML - class for shape templates and for shape instances

Dear experts,
I work on a tool for engineering. I need to have class TemplateShape which describes objects and their parameters(unit of measure, interval, formula for calculation,...) of the shape type. These parameters are user-defined. I also need a class Shape which will represent objects of the specific shape with its specific numbers(eg. par1 15 mm,..., calculated volume,... ). How can I model that relation between TemplateShape and Template in UML? I will work with objects of both classes.
Thank you very much for your help,
Radek

Class Diagram for Problem Statement

Hi All,

Could anyone help me with the following problem statement?

1. I have a folder where an external system deposits some flat files which needs to be “picked” up “processed” and “persisted” by the system we want to build
2. The files are simple ASCII files with lines & columns of data (column separator being used is a comma)
3. The files could be divided into multiple categories. The processing of the data within the file would depend on the category it falls under (processing logic is not important as long as the design of the processing unit is fleshed out)
4. Finally the processed data needs to be persisted into the database (the data design need not get into field level details for the processed data storage, as long as the table level ER is delved into)

Please guide in designing & tips to solve it. or any book reference.

Thanks,
Pad Ling

Concrete activity data in an Activity diagram

Hi there,

I am currently working in a project, where I'm designing an executable flow of activities, which is to be executed by a web application.
Each step in the flow, can be of both visual and logical character. One activity might tell the web application to show a page to the user with some template (this might be a menu template of sorts, where the user can navigate via hyperlinks), where as another activity might fetch some data from some resource.
To model this executable flow, I've looked at the UML Activity Diagram. Each activity can be stereotyped to match its type (lets say we have two types <<visual>> and <<logical>> ). Lets say I have a <<visual>> activity, and I want to say that some concrete data is attached to this activity (this might be visual data such as the header, and some description in the body of the page). How does one do this in the Activity diagram? Or are there alternatives to this solution, that fit the problem better?

Thanks.
