Sequence Diagram messages move down too far

I am working on a sequence diagram and trying to adjust the layout to be more compact. I have auto layout activated and absolute values set as described in a help document. However, when I try to move a message up the lifeline to close an empty space (it is not positioned properly by auto layout) the message and all following messages automatically move further down the page…

Any suggestions?
