The references to where the process is called from are interfering w the modeling.
How can I move the references?

Sorry but currently the in/out flow cannot be moved. You can, however, turn it off completely by unchecking Presentation Options > Show In/Out Flows from the diagram’s popup menu.
I’ve found out a hack as a quick fix though: You can resize the height of the start event to cause the in/out flow appears to be further away. Since start event’s display size will follow the minimum of width and height, so as long as the width remain unchanged, it would look normal even you resized it to ridiculously tall.
