I downloaded “eclipseUML_E301_freeEdition_2.0.0.beta.20041026.jar” and assumed it’s a self-extracting/installing file, but instead double-clicking brings up winzip - ok, I might install it myself but iI can’t see an installation guide and don’t even know where to I should extract the stuff.
Could somebody please put me back on track?

You simply have associated jar files to be opened with WinZip.
This jar file is an installer but you have to start it with java.
To do this you should right click on the jar go to Open With and select javaw, then just follow the instructions. You must have java installed before starting this installer
