Problem with VP for UML 6.3 under Vista Business

Hi,

I have installed VP for UML 6.3 (sp1_20080901) Standard Editon on a notebook running Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1.

When I start the application I get the following error:
“The JVM could not be started. The main method may have thrown an exception”

It seems that VP is still running but I’m not sure that everything is working correctly.
Is this a known problem?

Hans

Hi Hans,

Sorry for my late reply. Please try to right-click on the launcher of VP-UML 6.3 and select Run as Administrator in the popup menu.

Could you please kindly let me know if this help? Thanks!

Best regards,
Lilian Wong

Hi Lilian,

I tried your suggestion, and it works fine. thank you very much.

Hans

Hi Lilian,

By the way, in the short cut properties ( advanced button) I found a checkbox to always run the shortcut as an administrator.
That way you don’t need to right click every time, but just double click the shortcut icon.

Maybe this is of interest for anyone that encounters the same problem

Hans

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the additional information!

But for me, it still don’t work. If I start it with admin right, it works, but not with normal user rights. Is there any chance to start vm-uml as normal user without that error msg?

What is the consequence of that error msg any way?

Regards

Hi user,

Thanks for your post. I’ve forwarded the problem to our engineers to follow-up. If there is any news about this issue, I’ll come back to you at once.

If you have execute and write permission to VP Suite installation directory, after you click OK on the error message, you should be able to work with the tool (the error shows due to enabled User Access Control in Windows Vista).

Hi Lilian Wong

Are there any news? Even with UML 6.4 I get the error Msg if I log in as a user.
For me it is no solution to work with vista always as a admin.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry for coming back to this post before. This problem is fixed in our current version (VP-UML 7.1) - the error message will not show when start VP-UML on Vista. You can download evaluation version of VP-UML 7.1 from our website ( http://www.visual-paradigm.com/download/vpuml.jsp ) for trying.

If there is anything I can do to help, please feel free to ask.

Hi Lilian

What about 6.4 Sp2? We just recently bought new Licences and don’t want to update just because of this bug.

Regards
Michael

Hi Michael,

Seems VP-UML 6.4 SP2 does not cover this fix… You need to set the VP-UML launcher as Administrator to solve this problem.

By the way, there are numbers of new features and enhancements since VP-UML 6.4 SP2. Therefore it’s worth to upgrade to current version (VP-UML 7.1 SP1). You can find details about new features from:

This issue seems to be back in 8.0. I have altered my main Administrator user and am no loner able to use it for starting the app and so I cannot test the old work around.

good night, i have downloaded the vp-uml community edition, and follow the instructions, but when i click to run it, it says “the JVM could not be started, etc…” please, if anyone knows how to get this to work i appreciate it, im running windows 7 64bits, on a HP with 4gb of ram… Necrom15@gmail.com

Can you try the following steps and see can the application being start?

  1. download the attached file to bin folder of VP Suite

  2. rename it to run.bat

  3. execute run.bat

Look forward to hear from you.
