i think i get lost in all the functionality of VP! is there any documentation about a common project lifecycle available? what order of diagram creation is the best and which diagrams can i generate from another one?
a step by step description of a sample project would also be nice.

I suggest you start with with use case diagram, which helps you understand the problem domain and the user’s requirement. Flow of events defined inside a use case can be transformed into system level sequence diagram. You can then elaborate in more detail by forming tiered sequence diagrams.
