Updating VP server from 16.0 to 16.1 failed

Hi.

I just tried to update our VP server from 16.0. to 16.1 via web app. As the server did not respond in a while I restarted it and got the message that the server had an internal data storage failure. I was asked to submit the vpserver log which I just post at the end of this message.

I then downloaded the VP server 16.1 installed it from scratch and tried to migrate from my old server using migrate.bat. This generated the following errors:

So I skipped migration but moved a backup from yesterday (made with VP 16) to the root/web-inf directory and started VP 16.1
I then got the following message:
vpserver_data.zip found. Unfortunately, its version is older than this server. Migration is suspended.
Okay, I downloaded VP Server 16.0 and the same message came up.
To test I also downloaded VP Server 15.2 and here, the server told me, that my backup is newer than the server version.
How can I now get my backup up and running?

Seems the new MySQL driver does not work with your timezone “Mitteleurop?ische Zeit”.
Please open C:\VisualParadigmTeamworkServer\webserver\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\vpserver.properties with text editor.

It should similar to this:

database=2
databaseName=test
port=3306
host=127.0.0.1
user=root
encrypted_password=XXXXXXX

Please change to this format, replace with your own host, port, and database:

database=2
connectionUrl=jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/test?serverTimezone=UTC
user=root
encrypted_password=XXXXXXX

Then perform upgrade again.

Just two questions regarding the restore / migrate process.

  1. Do you think, that this also has something to do with this (the problem that the server tells us that the backup data is too old, even if the server version matches the backup version)? We never had the need to restore a backup and now I am curious if this would work (but I dont wanna try :slight_smile: ).
  2. What is the difference between migrate and restore?

Hi Steve,

  1. The backup can only restored with same version. Your backup is 16.0 so cannot restore in 16.1.
  2. Backup: generate a backup file for current installation (current version).
    Migrate: similar to backup, but run on new version (with parameter of current installation path) to generate a “backup file” for new version.
    Restore: install by restoring the backup file

Backup -> restore to same version
Migrate -> restore to new version

When I tried to get the backup running I had reinstalled (or unzipped as you do not really install anything) VP Server 16.0.
So I had a backup of 16.0.
I had a server of 16.0. The system told me: backup is too old -> ??
I had a server of 16.1. The system told me: backup is too old -> understood
I had a server of 15.2. The system told me: backup is newer -> understood
Any thoughts on that?

Hi Steve,

Sorry that we had made some fixes/patches in some builds cause incompatibility. Backup is preferred to restore with same build. Sorry that I didn’t clarify on last reply.
If you cannot find the setup file for that build, please post the build no. of your backup and we’ll help you getting the file.

* If your server is running, you can check from System Info tab at http://localhost:1999/admin.jsp#systemtools
Or check from C:\VisualParadigmTeamworkServer\webserver\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\installation.xml

Hi.

Okay this might have been the case, that the version which I redownloaded was not the version which we had been running before (though it was some kind of 16.0 version). I’ll check backup restorage for the actual system just to be sure.
Is it possible to get the version number out of the backup files?

Also it would be a good thing if one could see the server and backup version in the message, this would make it easier to understand the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. Our company policy forbids this, I am afraid.
So there is no way for me, to see this information, right?
If so, as I said, I would suggest, that this is made available as otherwise it could be quite a hassle to get an old backup running if an update has failed to whatever reason.
