FYI.
This issue has been discussed before e.g.
When you initially execute VP-UML, a dialog opens which should ask you which workspace you want to use, but with the Normal/Extra visual effects enabled in Ubuntu 7.10 (ie. compiz enabled) all you get is a blank gray box… the invisible buttons still work however. If you change the visual effects setting to None (e.g. compiz disabled) everything works fine
The solution thus far has been to set the following environment variable:
export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
However, after discussing this issue in forums.java.net it would appear that the version of the java jre shipped with VP-UML has this issue but if you replace it with the jre packaged with java 6 everything works fine.

I hope that helps anybody struggling with this issue.
